Bio-Med AI Summer School debates the role of AI in healthcare

In September 2024, the National Library of Portugal in Lisbon hosted the Bio-Med AI Summer School, a three-day international event on the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Organised by whatnext.law, a research centre of NOVA School of Law and Vieira de Almeida, in partnership with the Biomedical Research Foundation of the Academy of Athens, it brought together academics, professionals and students from health, law, technology and ethics. The goal was to bridge the gap between AI and the fields of biomedicine and health.

Speakers shared examples of how AI is already being used in Portugal and elsewhere. These included summarising medical consultations so doctors can focus on their patients, chatbots that help patients book appointments, detecting signs of prostate cancer in MRI scans, drafting reports from medical images, and a large language model designed to interpret mental health questions.

Participants also stressed that these tools must remain tools, with the final decision always resting with doctors. They highlighted the importance of knowing where data comes from, ensuring its quality and complying with European regulation, such as the AI Act. In the closing session, former Minister of Health Adalberto Campos Fernandes highlighted the role AI could play in increasing access to healthcare worldwide and accelerating medical research.
